St Joseph's Catholic Primary School Harrogate, a Voluntary Academy

"Let all that you do be done in love." (1 Corinthians 16:14)

Welcome to St. Joseph’s Mini Vinnies

An integral part of the Catholic life of the school are the Mini Vinnies. The Mini Vinnies are quite literally mini St. Vincent de Paul’s. They come together to help those in need within their school community. Mini Vinnies introduce children to social justice issues, to the St Vincent de Paul Society and to living faith through action.

Good Shepherd Celebration

We were delighted to have the opportunity to attend the Good Shepherd Celebration at Leeds Cathedral on Friday 13th May.

The Cathedral was attended by Catholic Schools across the Diocese to present Bishop Marcus with the amount we raised for the Good Shepherd Appeal.

Olaf, our President and Sophie, the Vice President, had the honour of parading our school banner around the Cathedral with other schools. They also presented Bishop Marcus with a beautiful certificate detailing how much we raised and how we achieved this.

Bishop Marcus took time to listen and talk to the representatives of each school, which was a great honour.

Thank you very much for your generosity and we look forward to receiving donations during March from Year 5.

Friendship Group

The Mini Vinnies finally visited the Friendship Group after over 2 years.  They had an incredible amount of fun creating St Patrick Day cards, listening to some funny jokes and playing Boccia.  They met some amazing people and learnt so much about their lives. A fantastic afternoon was had by all and many hearts were touched by smiles and laughter.

Mission Together Assembly

Last week we had a wonderful visit from Claire Colleran from Mission Together to tell us all about our chosen Lenten charity. The children are invited to fill their red boxes with any spare change to help children in Malawi as part of our Catholic Social Teaching.

Visiting the S.V.P 12th March 2019

We have had a wonderful time visiting the S.V.P Society recently and this was our first visit since Christmas.

We were greeted by smiling faces and were made to feel very welcome. It was an exciting afternoon where we were able to participate in a cartoon quiz and had to name the different characters. Well done to Abigail and Lucie’s team who were successful in answering the most questions correctly. After that, we took it in turns to play a gripping game of Boccia. Well done to the blue team who won!

We had a fantastic time and are looking forward to visiting again after Easter.

Mini Vinnies Mass at St Anne’s Cathedral by Beth and Mark

On Friday 14th September, the Mini Vinnies attended St Anne’s Cathedral in Leeds for the Mini Vinnies Commissioning Mass. We set off from school at quarter past eight with Mrs Scarisbrick, Mrs Rouse and Mrs Clemerson , one of Academy  Council members. Before the Mass started, Agatha and Logan welcomed people and handed out the Mass booklets to all of the other Mini Vinnies. We had the privilege of reading in front of all sixty six schools and Bishop Marcus. It was nerve wracking but a good experience. Bishop Marcus recommissioned all of the Mini Vinnies and blessed us all at the end of Mass.

Mini Vinnies visit the Little Sisters of the Poor in Headingley, by Sanuthi & Lila.

On the 1st May 2018 the Mini Vinnies went to see the Little Sisters Of The Poor.         When we arrived we met some of the Sisters and went into the beautiful chapel and sang some lovely songs such as: Here I am to Worship, Walk with me and Amazing Grace. Then we were introduced to some of the kind residents, We all brought some of our school work to show the residents and asked questions about their lives.

They gave us lovely food and made sure we were all well. After this we went into the glamorous garden to have a look around. We really enjoyed our time there and we presented them with a cheque for £854.45 following our successful fundraising.      We are also very grateful for the two beautiful paintings by Sister Mary Margaret which she gave to us for school!

Spring Planting with the SVP

On Tuesday 13th March, the Mini Vinnies had the absolute pleasure of meeting with the SVP (St Vincent de Paul Society) and planting some spring plants that could be taken home. Everyone enjoyed planting the pansies and violas and it was great that we could all work together and enjoy this activity. We can’t wait to see what the plants look like as Spring develops and the plants begin to flower.

Carol Singing with St Joseph's SVP Society, by Niall & Logan

On Tuesday 19th December, we went to the church hall to attend the SVP community tea and coffee afternoon and carol singing. We served drinks to the friendship group and were allowed to pull Christmas crackers with members of the group. We all enjoyed ourselves. Some of the pensioners let us have the toys in the crackers. We all loved it the afternoon and are excited to visit again. We sang Christmas Carols altogether and then returned to school. We are looking forward to joining the SVP again next term.

Advent Fun with the St Joseph's SVP Society

On Tuesday 12th December the Mini Vinnies went across to the church hall for a get together with the parish SVP group. We set the tables and listened to 'All Gold,' a choir who volunteered to sing for the afternoon. Once everybody was ready we served the parishioners a Christmas lunch. It was lovely to see them all smile

Harvest Festival Fundraising (Mini Vinnies & School Council) October 19th 2017

A huge thank you from the Mini Vinnies and School Council for your non-perishable food donations for the Harrogate Homeless Project. We collected dry/tinned food for the charity who came to collect our harvest festival donations in Friday's celebration assembly. The charity is a house for the homeless to sleep and eat . People pay £14 a week to stay there which helps them learn how to manage their money and pay bills. The charity also helps them find a permanent place to live. Our food donations will really help the people in need. Thank you.

Mini Vinnies is an organisation that encourages young people to turn their concerns into action and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing since our inauguration in February 2016!

Our President this year is Thomas and our Vice President is Louis, voted for by the Mini Vinnies.

Last year we raised money for the Little Sisters of the Poor in Leeds after two of their nuns came to talk to us about the incredible work they do to help elderly people in need. They really inspired us and we organised a pancake sale on Shrove Tuesday. Everyone at school enjoyed a delicious pancake and several parents bought some after school, helping us to raise almost £100. we will be continuing this fundraising event this year.

We also enjoyed meeting people from our parish’s Saint Vincent de Paul Society at one of their coffee ‘n chat afternoons. It was really interesting listening to how they help people in our community and they gave us lots of ideas about the little things we can all do to make a big difference. We will continue to build on our relationship with the parish SVP this year.

Watch this space for our next update on what we’ve been doing!

'Mini Vinnies' are Primary School children aged between 7 to 11 (or younger) who, with the permission of their parents and carers and the support of their Schools, are encouraged to embark on their first steps as possible 'Vincentians for life'.

Latest news: Mini Vinnies Harvest Fundraiser (October 2016)

We supported Harrogate Homeless Project during harvest by collecting donations of non-perishable foods to help homeless people in Harrogate. We are extremely grateful for all of the food donations from our families. Your generosity demonstrated how our faith bring us all together as a local community to 'turn care into action.' Adam from the Harrogate Homeless Project really appreciated all of our donations to support their charity. The Mini Vinnies were very proud of the success in leading their first harvest fundraiser. They also had lots of fun packing the goods!
